Legal Aid’s Emergency Flex Funds Program
Preventing Homelessness
Every day, families and individuals in San Diego County face the threat of eviction and homelessness. Since 2021, our Emergency Flex Funds Program has been a lifeline for more than 1,200 low-income neighbors, offering crucial, one-time financial assistance to help them overcome immediate housing crises. Whether it’s back rent, security deposits, first month’s rent, utilities, groceries, moving costs, temporary hotel stays, or transportation to court and apartment viewings, we provide real help when it’s needed most.
This program is available only to eligible, current LASSD housing clients and is designed to support the case goals agreed upon by the client and their legal advocate, with final approval by program management.
This targeted support doesn’t just keep people in their homes—it protects vital housing vouchers that can take years to obtain, helps seniors and people with disabilities manage the challenges of moving, and ensures that families don’t have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table. With digital grocery gift cards, U-Haul vouchers, and rides to critical appointments, we offer comprehensive support for those at risk of losing everything.
In 2024 alone, we assisted 202 households. But right now, our Emergency Flex Funds Program is suspended due to lack of funding. That means hundreds of vulnerable people are at risk of eviction and homelessness.
