How to Get Help

Due to coronavirus, the San Diego Superior Court has temporarily suspended some of its services.  We have modified our clinics as listed below. Please call us for more information, including resources available to you.  Our main intake line is 877-LEGAL-AID (877-534-2524) and please continue to visit our website at lassd.org for updates about our services and other community resources.  Thank you for your cooperation!

Legal Aid Society of San Diego

Eviction Clinic for San Diego County Courts

DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE SAN DIEGO SUPERIOR COURT HAS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED SOME OF ITS SERVICES.  OUR WALK-IN CLINICS ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO IN-PERSON ASSISTANCE.  FOR MORE INFORMATION CLICK HERE.

We help people (first-come, first served) prepare an answer to an Unlawful Detainer (Eviction) lawsuit against them.  NOTE:  Come in right away, as you may only have 5 days to file your answer, from the time you were served with the lawsuit papers.  We do not handle legal representation at this clinic, but, if you qualify, you can get a free lawyer here. 

Sometimes we can help you start an eviction case.  We can help you file against someone you live with; or against a tenant if you own no more than one rental unit.

  • Please note, the clinic does not assist with notices, defaults or execution of judgments.  You can get these services here.

Federal Taxes Clinic

We can help low income taxpayers (first-come, first served) fix their Federal Tax problems.  We help with IRS wage garnishments, bank levies, audits, EITC denials, negotiated settlements and other problems.

Domestic Violence Restraining Order Clinic-South County Courthouse

We help people (first-come, first-served) with paperwork for a Petition for, or a Response to, a Domestic Violence Restraining Order.  We help with forms and explain how to handle a restraining order case in court.  We do not offer in court representation.

Conservatorship Clinic

Due to COVID-19, our walk-in clinics are temporarily closed to in-person assistance.  The conservatorship Clinic remains open to provide remote assistance over the phone. If you have questions about Conservatorships or would like help preparing court forms, please call 619-471-2719 and leave a message for a clinic attorney to call you back.

The clinic provides free assistance with information on the Conservatorship process and court forms only to clinic participants not represented by attorneys to Petition the Court for Conservatorship of the Person. We also provide information regarding alternatives to Conservatorship. No appointments are provided and services are offered on a walk-in basis.  We do not provide legal advice nor representation to clinic participants in court.   For more information, click here.

Civil Appellate Self-Help Workshop

Are you a party to a civil case on appeal in the California Court of Appeal, Fourth District? Have you have filed your notice of appeal?  Do you now need help working your way through the appeal process (because you are without an attorney)?  The Civil Appellate Self-Help Workshop will give you information on procedures and resources to handle your own appeal.

Medi-Cal/CalWorks/CalFresh Hearing Clinic

Do you have a hearing on Medi-Cal, CalFresh, CalWorks or other such things (such as Welfare to Work)?  If so, we have a Free Administrative Hearing Clinic.  It is located at the 1255 Imperial Avenue, Suite 300, Appeal Office.  This is where you will be going for your hearing.

Call our office 877.534.2524, to find out the dates and times of that clinic.  You may park in the structure right next to the trolley station and get validated parking.  Take a parking ticket and you can get it validated after your hearing.  Click here for directions.

Debt Collection Lawsuit Clinics

If you are being sued for a debt, call us, at 877.534.2524.  We can see if you and your case qualify for our help.  We will give you the location, dates, and times of the free clinic near you.  We will be sure you can talk to someone directly about your lawsuit.

You will learn about your legal options.  We will assist you every step of the way through your court process.  We will help from filing your answer to taking your case to trial.  

After your first visit, you don't need an appointment.  Our help is on a first come, first served basis.

Name and Gender Marker Change Clinic

Deportation Defense Clinic

Learn about your options in Immigration Court.  Assistance available for people who are detained or non-detained. Special Education Rights Clinic

We are offering a free, online Special Education Rights clinic on the last Thursday of each month at 3:00 p.m.  Topics include special education assessments, special education rights during distance learning, preparing for your child's IEP meeting, how to request education records, and due process rights.  To attend a clinic, please email educlinic@lassd.org for more information.
