Today, the federal tax code is more complicated than ever.  At the same time, if you have past or current tax problems, not taking steps to resolve those problems can result in financial difficulties like:

• Judgment in federal court

• IRS liens against your property

• Garnishments of a portion of your wages

• Withholding by Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of future refunds

Who Can Help You?

The Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc. (LASSD) provides free legal assistance through its Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic.  LASSD and its Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic are not a part of or affiliated with the IRS.  Instead, through the Clinic, LASSD advises low-income taxpayers concerning federal income tax issues.  Through our in-house tax attorney or through pro bono volunteer attorneys, we also represent low-income taxpayers in dealing with the IRS or in Tax Court, when appropriate.

What Types of Tax Problems Do We Handle?

The Clinic helps Taxpayers with federal individual income tax matters.  Normally, we don not assist with California state income tax matters.  Some of the kinds of federal tax matters that the Clinic handles include:

• IRS Audits

• IRS Collection notices

• IRS Liens and garnishments

• IRS Demands of file tax returns of past years

• IRS Notices to assess taxes based on income of a taxpayer's ex-spouse

• Notices or actions by IRS disallowing a taxpayer's claim of the earned income credit

• Problems involving the theft of a taxpayer's social security number by another person for tax purposes

Tax Preparation

Help is available at a local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site.  For the location and hours of the nearest VITA site, call the InfoLine of San Diego county at 211 or 619.230.0997.

Family Self-Sufficiency Services

Provide a "hand-up" rather than a handout by stabilizing families in crisis.  This allows families to benefit from employment development placement and ongoing support.  For more information, call Home Start, Inc. at 619.283.9624.

Reach for the Heights, Financial Literacy Education Program

Provides financial education to families and individuals around budgeting, banking, credit, and assets building.  For more information, call Home Start, Inc. at 619.283.9624.
